PKG Enterprises, Inc. Blog “Building Our Web Business”

PKG Enterprises began back in 1989 when I formed a company in the healthcare industry. By 1999 it was apparent that the previous 22 years (those ten, plus the prior twelve) had exacted their toll on me. It was at this point in time that a decision needed to be made. Either recommit, in a major way, to that industry (leases, contracts, capital equipment, etc.) or take an opportunity to pull the plug and pursue other interests in life. I pondered the prospects for five, maybe ten whole seconds before I said, “See ya!” and began to wind down the business operations. By the end of 2000, I was (almost) free at last.

None of that matters very much for the current projects, except that during this time the internet blossomed, I started making a few notes on interesting things that I observed and began to outline ideas for different businesses. My semi-retirement morphed into an enjoyable lifestyle that had no definite lines drawn between work/play/education or business/personal time. I finally got to spend substantial amounts of quality time with the kids before they graduated from high school!

In 2004, we made the first foray into the internet with “The Chrome Nun” (this will be discussed in greater detail in the near future). This adventure lasted three years, in a couple of different forms, until we temporarily shut down version 1.0 for retooling. But, I continued to make notes and outline ideas.

In mid-2007, the final chains (records retention) to the healthcare industry had been broken. Completely free at last! And, did I mention that I made notes and outlined ideas?

By 2008 those notes and ideas had completely filled a six pound binder, confidence was high and the time was right to start the first three projects, Judge Brewing Company, PKG Graphics and version 2.0 of The Chrome Nun!

For the record, I like to research and learn enough about a particular subject, so that I can consider myself, as a marketing colleague way say, a “SME” (source material expert) before attempting a business in that area. I also consider myself to be fairly intelligent. That is to say, I’m bright enough to know that there are smarter people than me, in any given area, and I’ll look to them for assistance whenever it’s needed. Finally, I am not a complete “FNG” (friggin’ new guy) when it comes to the internet. However, I, like many of the folks that will be following the progress here, am not a “Tekky” and do not speak “Geek”.

Years ago, one of my mentors would jokingly say about himself, “The reason I’m so smart is that I’ve learned from my mistakes…all of them!” So, please feel free to observe our progress, comment and kibitz! -PKG
